Shortgrass Theater Productions
Our Historic Shortgrass Theater Shortgrass Playhouse performances take place in one of Hobart’s historic treasures, the Old City Hall. Constructed from 1912 to 1913, the building originally contained city offices and the fire department. The beautiful auditorium on the second floor originally seated 1,000 and was the scene of a wide range of community activities – from high school graduation exercises, class plays, lyceum programs, band concerts, prize fights, Liberty Bond rallies, religious revivals and even a murder trial. The building placed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1978, and a few weeks later the Shortgrass Playhouse entered into a long-term lease with the City Council and renovations culminated with a gala reopening on October 5, 1980. Thanks to our patrons, benefactors, and the City of Hobart, the Playhouse has begun some necessary renovations such as replacing the heating and air conditioning unit. There is still much more to do including repairs to the seating and replacing some areas of carpeting. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
